Allegations of Police Assault in Kobeigane Spark Calls for Justice

Kobeigane, Sri Lanka — Serious allegations of police brutality have emerged from the Kobeigane area, where a local mason, Pradeep Kumara, was reportedly subjected to inhumane treatment during a police investigation into a theft.

According to reports, the incident began after homeowners lodged a complaint regarding the theft of gold items from their residence. Mr. Kumara, who had reportedly visited the house on a previous occasion for work, was asked to appear at the police station to assist with the investigation. Demonstrating willingness to cooperate, he voluntarily presented himself to the authorities.

However, what followed has raised significant concern among human rights advocates. Mr. Kumara is alleged to have been repeatedly assaulted during interrogation and detained for several hours under coercive conditions. Sources claim he was pressured to confess to a crime he did not commit and subjected to threats, including being falsely implicated in serious offenses such as possession of a hand grenade and drug-related charges.

In a significant development, the actual suspects connected to the robbery were reportedly apprehended by police on the same day. By that time, Mr. Kumara had already been admitted to hospital, suffering from physical injuries and mental distress allegedly resulting from the assault.

Despite the gravity of these allegations, there are growing concerns that no formal investigation has been initiated into the conduct of the officers involved. Civil society organizations, professional groups, and human rights activists have strongly condemned the incident, calling for immediate accountability and adherence to due process.

Mr. Kumara and his family are now demanding justice, urging authorities to take swift and transparent action against those responsible. Advocates emphasize that this case highlights broader systemic issues related to custodial violence and the urgent need for institutional reforms to protect the rights and dignity of all individuals.
